There are so many great horror shows airing either on network TV or on various streaming services that are getting the majority of the spotlight such as Midnight Mass, AHS, Day of the Dead, Chucky, etc., and rightly so.
It’s my job to inform you guys about shows that are really good that you aren’t watching, but should be.
One of the shows that you definitely should be watching is CHAPELWAITE from the Epix network. I guarantee if more people were familiar with the source material, they would be tuning in. Chapelwaite is based on Stephen King’s short story, Jerusalem’s Lot, in his book of shorts, Night Shift, originally published in 1978.
Jerusalem’s Lot is the basis for one of King’s most popular novels, Salem’s Lot. This story is a prequel.
The series was developed and written by the brother team of Jason and Peter Filardi. The incredible cast stars Adrien Brody, Emily Hampshire, Hugh Thompson, Gord Rand, and more.
Whereas Midnight Mass takes vampire lore in a new direction, Chapelwaite features the bloodsuckers in all their monstrous and gory traditional glory.
In the series, Chapelwaite follows Captain Charles Boone (Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea. However, Charles will soon have to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.
The series takes place in the 1850s, long before the events of Salem’s Lot, but it sets up the background story of how vampires set up shop in Jerusalem’s Lot.
What I love about Chapelwaite is a return to gothic horror in the same vein (pun intended) as Hammer or Spanish horror from the 1960s and 70s. The show was shot in Nova Scotia, Canada. The set and production design are remarkable. It looks as if it had a much bigger budget than I’m sure it really did. The look of the series is top-notch.
Everything about Chapelwaite is top-notch. The acting from all the leads down to supporting characters is superior to most other shows on TV right now. Adrian Brody does a tremendous job in the lead as Charles Boone. Also, Emily Hampshire is fantastic playing against type in her role. Most people know her from her award-winning role in the comedy masterpiece Schitt’s Creek.
For vampire lovers, the makeup effects are wonderful. These vamps look traditional and monstrous in every way. The vampire lord Jakub is played by Christopher Heyerdahl (Van Helsing), and he never disappoints. There is also a sufficient amount of gore and bloody happenings that won’t disappoint fans.
My take on Chapelwaite is to search it out at all costs! I found it more pleasurable than even Midnight Mass and any other horror series I’ve watched in the last few years. The only show that even comes close is Penny Dreadful from 2014 on Showtime. If you love the grand ole’ gothic horror vampire films of yesteryear, you will love this show. I highly recommend Chapelwaite, especially at this time of year.
