Sometimes when encountering a band that has been around for ages without coming to my knowledge I really doubt the power of my heavy metal mojo. LEVIATHAN is a Progressive Power Metal band that was formed in 1989, “Words Waging War” is the bands seventh full-length output to date and after only around six minutes I can say I am quite happy to finally make the acquaintance with these gentlemen. When listening to LEVIATHAN every Prog-head will get reminded of multiple bands like FATES WARNING, QUEENSRYCHE OR DREAM THEATER. OK! Raphael Gazal does not fly near the vocal altitudes of vocalists like Geoff Tate or John Arch but he hits every note the narrative commands him to and that is far more than a shitload of newbies can say about their vocal style. Most of the songs are in the mids and lows when it comes to Gazal’s vocals but this lack of pressure and excitement fits perfectly to the sonic landscapes LEVIATHAN construct for their lengthy and complex musical arrangements. For me Progressive music is like the musical equivalent to the proverbial eye of the storm, a place to chill and rest and not be concerned by the real world for a short period of time. If this is what LEVIATHAN want to accomplish with this fine record I deem their mission as accomplished.
Conclusion: like prog? If yes: support them now!
