R.I.P. – Character Actor and Longtime Baddie Anthony James Passes Away at 77!

Character actor Anthony James has passed away at the age of 77. He was known for playing the heavy in films and TV shows quite often due to his menacing appearance.

James passed away on May 26th from Cancer.

He was tall and lanky with a pockmarked face, which made him a perfect villain on screen.

After quitting acting in the early ’90s, James pursued a successful career as an artist. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in such major cities as New York, Boston and Miami.

He acted in two Best Picture Oscar winners, In The Heat of the Night (1967) and Unforgiven (1992), which was his final film. He appeared in a handful of films but the majority of his acting career was spent on TV. Some of his other film roles included Vanishing Point (1971), High Plains Drifter (1973), Blue Thunder (1983), and more.

He played the villain in many television shows in the 1970’s and 80’s such as Married… with Children (1987), Beauty and the Beast (1987), Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), Simon & Simon (1981), The A-Team (1983), Riptide (1984), The Fall Guy (1981), Hunter (1984), Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979), Quincy M.E. (1976), Charlie’s Angels (1976), Vega$ (1978), Starsky and Hutch (1975), S.W.A.T. (1975), Ironside (1967), Hawaii Five-O (1968), Bonanza (1959), Gunsmoke (1955) and The Big Valley (1965) just to name a few.

He did have a few genre appearances in such things as V (TV Series) (1984), Amazing Stories (TV Series) (1987) and such films as Burnt Offerings (1976), Return from Witch Mountain (1978), Ravagers (1979), Nightmares (1983), Mortuary Academy (1988).

The bookish James also wrote poetry and published Language of the Heart, a book of his paintings and poetry, in 1994. His memoir, Acting My Face — a title borrowed from an oft-told story about his acting idol Marlon Brando — was published in 2014.

Anyone around during the 70’s and 80’s was very familiar with James’ face from his numerous TV show appearances. He will be sorely missed by his many fans.

About Michael Juvinall (3467 Articles)
I am a devoted husband and father. I have been a voracious horror fan since the early age of 5 and metal fan since I was 14. I watch all horror films but my great loves are classic horror films: Universal Monsters, Werewolves, Hammer Horror and an all-around affinity for things that go bump in the night! I'm also a huge fan of extreme metal music.
