“Aaron’s voice and lyrics are perfectly counterpointed by the colossal weight of Andrew Craighan’s deep dark guitar, riffs heaving like abandoned warships on stormy seas, tear-jerking twin guitar harmonies embracing like dying lovers…” – Metal Hammer, 9/10

“It’s a nuanced gloom, though; elegiac prog, if you will, fluttering doom filled with foreboding and occasional flashes of light, like sunlight piercing grey clouds…” – Classic Rock

“30 years at the doom mill, My Dying Bride remain the last word in oddly life-affirming misery.”  Planet Rock, 4/5

“Atmospheric, deliciously dark and crushingly heavy…” – Powerplay Magazine, 9/10

My Dying Bride‘s three decades of misery almost came to an end several years ago. Following 2015’s universally lauded Feel the Misery album, vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe‘s daughter, just five years old at the time, was diagnosed with cancer. Shocked and heartbroken, Stainthorpe put all band activities on hold while he, his immediate family, and My Dying Bride put their collective energies into eradicating what Stainthorpe called, “the cruellest of God’s bitter and loveless creations.” The high hurdles, however, didn’t stop with cancer. In 2018, returning original member and guitarist Calvin Robertshaw texted his departure, effective immediately. No reason was given or explanation provided to anyone. Then, just as My Dying Bride had regrouped after positive news that his daughter was effectively cancer-free, returning drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels departed right before the band was slated to enter Mark Mynett’s studio, Mynetaur Productions. Down two members but feeling right as rain, My Dying Bride moved on, mastered the doldrums, recording the magnificent new album, The Ghost of Orion, to the joyful tears of fans across the globe, in the process.
About Michael Juvinall (3884 Articles)
I am a devoted husband and father. I have been a voracious horror fan since the early age of 5 and metal fan since I was 14. I watch all horror films but my great loves are classic horror films: Universal Monsters, Werewolves, Hammer Horror and an all-around affinity for things that go bump in the night! I'm also a huge fan of extreme metal music.
