R.I.P. – Makeup Effects Wiz, Director, Writer, Jon Carl Buechler Passes Away!

A tough announcement tonight guys as another one of the greats has left us too soon. John Carl Buechler has passed away at the age of 66. The man known for his work as a special makeup effects wizard, director, actor, writer, producer, and anything else you can think of had a short battle with prostrate cancer. Buechler died early Monday, according to reports.

Buechler got his start in Hollywood in 1978, working as makeup artist on the film Stingray. But then he really made a name for himself as makeup artist on such classic films as Mausoleum (1983), Ghoulies (1984), Re-Animator (1985), Troll (1986), From Beyond (1986), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Bride of Re-Animator (1989), Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Hatchet (2006), and way too many more to mention.

He also directed the classic films The Dungeonmaster (1984), Troll, Cellar Dwellar, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (where he introduced the world to Kane Hodder as Jason), Ghoulies Go to College, and again too many more to mention.

The man was a jack-of-all-trades who also was an actor, writer, producer, art director, visual effects artist, and so on. He did it all. Last month, his wife started a GoFundMe page in order to help with his mounting medical bills.

Buechler was a fellow Illinoian who was Born on June 18, 1952, in Belleville, Illinois. Buechler is survived by his wife and children, and you can find the GoFundMe campaign at this link.

If you are like me, you were entertained by Mr. Buechler’s work for almost 40 years and his work meant so much to me growing up as a horror movie fan. I can’t imagine what this industry would’ve been like without his talents and accomplishments.

John Carl and his many films will forever hold a special place in my heart and the hearts of his fans.

We all would like to offer our condolences to John Carl’s family, friends, and fans at this time. May you rest in peace always!
