Some very sad and hard-hitting news today as actor Luke Perry has passed away at the age of 52! It’s never easy when someone you know from film, TV, or music passes away but the news of Perry’s death today seems like a gut punch for those of us to have watched him on his best-known role as “Dylan” from the 90’s TV drama, Beverly Hills, 90210, as well as “Pike” in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film or any other of his nearly 100 roles in film and TV.
Perry suffered a massive stroke this past Wednesday, February 27th at his home in the Los Angeles area. Very few details surrounding his stroke were given to press during his hospitalization, only that doctors had Perry in a medical induced coma. The sad news of his death was released this morning. He was only 52 years-old.
Perry made his biggest mark in TV portraying the hunky “Dylan McKay” on the hit series, Beverly Hills, 90210. He kept working steadily ever since in nearly 100 films and TV shows.
His most recent role was on the CW series Riverdale, a dark series from the Archie comic universe. In that show, he portrayed “Fred Andrews”, father of Archie Andrews. There is also a planned 90210 reunion series that Perry was to busy to star in but he did plan to make a brief appearance in the revival.
Genre fans will remember Perry for his role of “Pike” in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film from 1992. Other notable genre roles were The Fifth Element (1997), Invasion (TV Mini-Series) (1997), The Night of the Headless Horseman (TV Movie) (1998), Night Visions (TV Series) (2001), Descent (TV Movie) (2005), Silent Venom (Video) (2009), The Final Storm (2010),
Perry was born on October 11, 1966, in Mansfield, Ohio. He is survived by two children and a fiance.
The producers of Riverdale said in a statement, “A father figure and mentor to the show’s young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness.”
I really have to say this is a tough one. He was such a consummate professional. Everyone that ever had the chance to know him or work with him, loved him. He was a down-to-earth guy that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He is gone way too soon but will never be forgotten.
All of us at Horror Patch would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Luke Perry’s family and friends.
