R.I.P. – R. Lee Ermey Has Passed Away at 74!

I hate doing these obituaries and here’s another one that is very hard. Incredible character actor R. Lee Ermey has passed away at the age of 74.

It is being reported that he passed away due to complications from pneumonia on Sunday morning, said his longtime manager.

Ermey was a Golden Globe-nominated actor who was best known for his performance as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in director Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (1987). He was known by his close friends by the nickname “The Gunny”.

The news was announced via his official Twitter account by his longtime manager, Bill Rogin, who wrote: “It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (“The Gunny”) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.”

His manager went on to say on Facebook, “He will be greatly missed by all of us,” he wrote. “It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of Full Metal Jacket fame was a hard and principled man. The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.”

He continued: “There are many Gunny’s, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform. That’s what he wanted most of all.”

Ermey was not only known in Hollywood for his tough guy, military characters but he was one in real life. He was a U.S. Marine Corps staff sergeant. He was also a gunnery sergeant and a drill instructor who served 14 months in Vietnam and completed two tours in Okinawa, Japan.

His film and TV resume included over 124 roles but he also had several appearances in the horror genre including Up From The Depths (1979), The Rift (1990), The Terror Within II (1991), Body Snatchers (1993), Tales from the Crypt (TV Series) (1994), Se7en (1995), The X-Files (TV Series) (1995), The Frighteners (1996), Willard remake (2003), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (2003), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006).

Ermey was well-known as the voice of Sarge in all the Toy Story films.
